The Sad Reality of Personal Trainer Failure

I love personal trainers and sincerely admire their skills and the work they do for society. But the sad reality is that there is a tremendous turnover in the profession, almost like a revolving door.

It reminds me of the real estate profession, which I was a part of for many years. You have a few top producers at the top of the heap that have a waiting list of clients; a somewhat larger group in the middle who are solid performers and good practitioners; and then a huge pool of part-time and full time newbies that are just entering the field and trying to survive. Many, if not most of the newbies do not make it and are out of the business within a year or two.  The classic 90-10 or 80-20 success pyramid.

What separates the cream from the crop?

As an observer of the profession (not a member thereof), I have my own opinion. Interested?

Pull back the curtain, remove the smoke and mirrors and what it boils down to is one issue: results, as defined by the client.

It’s not education, certifications, sales ability, interpersonal skills, teaching skills, appearance, etc. While these intangibles are important and certainly contribute the long-term success of a personal trainer, they pale in comparison to the RESULTS the client thinks they are achieving. And perception is reality.

Most clients of a personal trainer in general practice have one major objective in mind…to lose weight. They may verbalize other goals like improve health, improve flexibility but their main goal is to lose that belly fat and get thin. Period.

And when they quit using their personal trainer, they will usually say it’s about money, the economy, employment situation, family or similar issues. It sounds good and in a face to face or over the phone interaction, it removes blame from the personal trainer. But trust me, if they were losing weight, they would walk over hot coals to continue training!

The problem of course, is that the typical personal trainer focuses their attention on teaching their client how to exercise. It’s what they know and they do that very, very well in most cases. Nevertheless, as anyone who has lost a large amount of weight knows, exercise is important but only contributes 10%-15% to the weight loss equation. After all, many people lose weight and never exercise.

Weight loss success is primarily attributed to caloric intake, as managed by a variety of mental toughness techniques. If a client does not know how to deal with stress, hunger, emotional eating, excuses, portion control among other issues, the client will fail at weight loss; and the personal trainer will pay the price by eventually losing a client. From the viewpoint of the client, “…why should I continue paying my personal trainer when I’m not losing weight…what’s the point?”

Are you a personal trainer or fitness professional? Imagine what your business would look like if you were able to help your clients overcome the mental obstacles that are preventing them from losing weight… epic!

Teach them the 14 step “mindset mojo” process in Weight Loss for Wimps and you’ll become a rich Rockstar or Superhero…your choice!

Do you want a simple solution…”gift” all your clients a copy of the book…your bottom line will skyrocket, guaranteed!

Is Your Skinny Doctor a Jerk?

Do you have a skinny doctor who tells you “…you need to learn to push yourself away from the table,” or make other equally outrageous statements…advising you on losing weight?

It use to really make my blood boil. Skinny doctors who’ve never had a weight problem their whole life, pompous asses looking down their nose at me, telling me to lose weight…treating me almost like I was the village idiot or the neighborhood drug dealer.

Lately, I’ve been doing some research on the topic of weight bias in our society. I knew it existed because anyone who has been or is overweight has experienced it in their lives…at work, at school and at the doctor’s office.

But I was shocked to learn that according to the Rudd Center at Yale University, in one study 69% of the 2,449 overweight or obese women reported bias against them by Doctors. These results certainly confirmed my own experiences in the past but the numbers were much higher than I would have guessed.

Other studies support this finding, showing that doctors seeing overweight patients tend to spend less time with the patient, engage in less discussion, and do less intervention.

The sad truth is that most of us fat people, when faced with criticism at the doctor’s office or at work or school…react by eating more or refusing to diet. It just pisses us off, right?!! It sure as hell doesn’t motivate us.

The motivation has to come from within. You have to experience a “tipping point” which may be externally triggered but the next step, experiencing the “white hot moment” of intense emotion, must come from within. Channeled negative emotion transformed into positive emotion and positive action is the key to long-term weight loss success.

I promise you, you WILL LEARN how to use and transform all of your negativity into positive action when you read my new book, Weight Loss for Wimps. It is jammed packed full of unique and creative weight loss motivation tips.

Funny New Year Resolutions | Jay Leno

If you’ve watched Jay Leno’s Tonight Show for any length of time, you know that he always comes up with a series of funny New Year Resolutions. This time of the year, you can count on it! Also, he frequently cracks jokes about our obesity problem in the U.S.

Funny New Year Resolutions

Last year, one of his funny New Year Resolutions was as follows:

“Now there are more overweight people in America than average weight people. So, overweight people are now average, which means you’ve already met your New Year’s resolution!”

Kind of tongue in cheek funny because it speaks to a serious problem – what I call “cultural obesity.” In other words, since the majority of people in our society are now overweight, it’s become somewhat acceptable and “normal” to be heavy. While in some respects that is fine, overall it is not primarily because of the related health issues with obesity.

In the spirit of the evening, many people worldwide make funny New Year Resolutions. After all, it’s a happy occasion so why not laugh and have fun?

But most people also do a little self reflection and come up with typically three resolutions. And the top three almost always includes weight loss, making more money and getting better organized.

How did your weight loss resolution work out for you this year? Or last year?

Recent studies estimate that about 55% of people worldwide make at least one resolution but after about three weeks, it’s usually over. Roughly 90% of the people making resolutions fail to accomplish any of their goals.

The reason? There is no emotional investment or commitment in the process, just wishful thinking.

How about this year you take a moment to consider the long term health and happiness issues connected with your excess weight? Is this the year you are finally going to do something about it? Great! I can help you with that!

Check out my new eBook, Weight Loss for Wimps – How to Lose Your Belly Fat, Look Younger and Get Healthy, Sexy and Thin.

Lose 20 Pounds Fast to Fit the Bridesmaid Dress From Hell!

Losing 20 pounds fast, like in 30 days, is within my area of expertise… but a bridesmaid dress from Hell… not so much.

One of my coaching clients (“Jill”) had this particular issue (I learn so much from the diversity of my clients!). Apparently, this is such a common experience that “…just about every woman on the planet can relate to it!”

“Ok, so what exactly is the problem…your weight or the dress?,” I asked Jill.

“What…are you from Mars? It’s BOTH! I love the bride but once again, I’m a bridesmaid in a wedding where I have to fit into a butt ugly, strapless dress that makes me look like queen of the muffin tops!”

Then, she really got upset… “I’ll be damned if I’m go’in to look like that; I HAVE to lose 20 pounds before the fitting!”  The fitting was scheduled in 36 days.

I didn’t appreciate all the nuances (like what’s the big deal about a strapless dress?) but I knew I could help her with dropping the 20 lbs. That’s what I do.

I don’t normally recommend an accelerated weight loss program. It’s a little hard on your body and your mind; and unless you’re very careful, you’ll gain it all back in short order. That is unless you learn how to make a permanent lifestyle change as I teach in my new book, Weight Loss for Wimps.

Nevertheless, I’ve worked with several clients with the same goal of losing 20 pounds in 30 days or thereabouts. It’s typically associated with an upcoming event like a wedding, class reunion, family gathering; getting back into the job market after a layoff; and getting back into the dating scene rather suddenly i.e. breakup or divorce.

And of course, there is always the annual ritual of making a New Year’s resolution to lose weight. That usually works out well for us, right?!

Heavyweight – I Had to Buy a Second Airline Seat

Just imagine the humiliation, disgust, embarrassment, not to mention the anger of being forced to buy a second airline seat because of your weight. Not because your butt was too big to fit in the seat – solely on the basis of your weight.

It happened to me almost 4 years ago and it is still white hot fresh in my mind, as if it happened yesterday. … and I was only at 285 lbs., a small NFL lineman! Yeah, right! Funny how easy it is to deceive oneself!

My wife and I were living the good life in Costa Rica. We’d spent about 3 ½ years down there, living in a small beach community. At 6’ 2”, I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes, was popping 5 nitroglycerin pills a day to relieve my chest pain, plus blood pressure pills, etc.  I wore 2XX shirts and had a 44 inch waist.  In short, I was out of control and knew I was going to assume room temperature at any moment. I thought about that every day.

One day, I was in San Jose (capital city) and decided to fly back to the beach town where we lived. Just a short 40 minute flight on a small 18 seat commuter plane that would save me from 4 hours of pounding in a car. All I had with me was a shoulder bag with a laptop and some clothes. I went to the airport and started the check-in process: “Please step on the scales with your carry-on bag… I’m sorry sir, but you will need to purchase a second ticket… your weight is well in excess of our criteria.”

Obese Kids and Fat Dogs Break My Heart

I know, I know…I’m stepping in it when I even mention the term “obese or fat kids.” But I’m willing to take the arrows in the back. Like most parents, I love kids and I also love dogs.  And with this post, I’m challenging YOU to be part of the solution, not part of the problem.

By now, you know the official statistics.  According to the CDC, about 33% of the children in the U.S. are significantly overweight or obese and the percentage is increasing each year. Same for adults. Walk around any mall and you’ll see it’s probably closer to 50%.

When I see obese kids and fat dogs, I well-up and want to cry. Yeah, I guess I’m a “wimp” in that regard. It does break my heart because regardless of age, I know the kid is living in hell and the poor dog is not going to live very long. And neither has any control over their situation. It’s not their damn fault!

And by the way, with respect to kids, I’m not talking about a “chubby” or slightly overweight kid…I’m focused on the ones that are truly obese. You know, the ones that all the other kids tease, torment, bully, post ugly stuff on Facebook about, pick last for the team, never invite to birthday parties; the ones that hate to get up in the morning and go to school; the ones that hide in their room, play sick, play computer games all day and night, never go outside to play or ride a bike or play sports. The ones that have few if any friends. Continue reading
